Unmet Needs

Prevalence of Cardiovascular disease including Co-occurring cardiovascular diseases, and Chronic Comorbidities

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Australia and indeed, the world:

  • Approximately one in six people in Australia are reported to live with CVD, accounting for over 4.5 million people
  • Nearly half of the adult population in the USA have some form of CVD, accounting for over 120 million people
  • Globally, there are over 620 million people living with CVD

There is increasing awareness about the impact of Co-occurring CVDs and chronic comorbidities on the survival and quality of life of CVD patients. The need for early detection, intervention, management and treatment of co-occurring CVDs and comorbidities is on the rise:

  • A significant number of CVD patients have multiple CVDs
  • Approximately 30%-60% of patients living with chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aged over 40 years are estimated to have an underlying CVD
  • Approximately 30% of cancer patients who survive their cancer diagnosis go on to develop CVD as a result of cardiotoxicity from cancer treatments
  • CVD remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in patients living with chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Cost of Heart Disease

So too is the cost on the individual patient, healthcare system and society:

  • The total % of GDP spent on healthcare for chronic diseases in developed nations with ageing populations continues to grow
  • As the leading cause of death in the world, CVD accounts for one of the highest expenditures in the healthcare system of developed nations
  • CVD-related hospitalisations and unplanned readmissions due to poor post-discharge monitoring or management accounts for the largest portion of CVD-related healthcare expenditure

Lack of accessibility and low patient autonomy

Patients want more support and autonomy beyond their face-to-face clinical consultations. There is a need for:

  • Greater control and autonomy over their own data and health management
  • Better access to healthcare for a range of chronic comorbidities
  • More support, self-confidence and motivation to achieve medication or treatment compliance and long-term health goals
  • Better communication with treating clinicians for earlier intervention and targeted adjustments to treatment and management

There is currently no patient-friendly device in the market that effectively supports remote frequent monitoring for all major categories of cardiovascular disease and chronic comorbidities in order to guide and deliver early targeted intervention to meet the needs above.
